About Machakos Level 5 Hospital

Machakos hospital was built in 1922 to serve the soldiers of the First World War. The Hospital became a health center in 1945 and served as a district hospital until 2008 when it was elevated to a level 5 Hospital in recognition of the fact that it serves as a referral facility for the entire Machakos county, and neighboring  counties. The hospital is a teaching institution for Machakos Medical Training College (MTC) and also hosts interns from University of Nairobi Medical School and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.  In the recent past it has also been considered as a teaching hospital for Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Mt.Kenya universities.

The projected catchment population for Machakos County (2016) was 1,263,139 .The hospital serves this population and also other populations from neighboring counties of Nairobi, Makueni, Kitui and Kajiado .
